Porous Scaffold Fabrication and Surface Modification for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine

Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have been rapidly developed in recent years as new approaches to restore or replace the lost or malfunctioned tissues and organs. Many engineered tissues and organs such as skin and cartilage have already been used for clinical applications. The structures and surface properties of porous scaffolds and biomaterials play an important role in manipulation of cell functions and promotion of the formation of functional tissues and organs. A number of highly biocompatible and functional biomaterials and scaffolds, and surface modification methods have been developed to mimic the nano-structured extracellular matrices and hierarchical structures of cellular microenvironment. This lecture will highlight the latest development and progress, future trends and challenges of porous scaffolds and surface modification technology used for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
About the speaker
Prof. Dr. Guoping Chen is Group Leader of Polymeric Biomaterials Group, Biomaterials Center, National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan. He received his PhD at Kyoto University (Japan) in 1997 majoring in Biomaterials. He spent one year at Nara Institute of Science and Technology, and two and half years at National Institute for Advanced Interdisciplinary Research as a postdoctoral fellow. He became a researcher in 2000 and a senior researcher in 2003 at Tissue Engineering Research Center, National Institute for Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. He moved to Biomaterials Center, NIMS as a senior researcher in 2004 and has been group leader since 2007. He is also a Guest Professor at Kanazawa Institute of Technology, Japan and a Guest Professor at Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research interests include polymeric porous scaffolds, biomimetic biomaterials, surface modification and cartilage tissue engineering. He has authored more than 160 publications, documented 20 patents and given more than 50 plenary and invited presentations. He has received several awards such as Young Scientist Award from Japanese Biomaterials Society in 2001, Original Award from the Japanese Society of Artificial Organs in 2002, and Tsukuba Award of Chemical and Bio-Technology from Tsukuba Foundation for Chemical and Bio-Technology in 2005.
